Landslide on Lansdowne!
The 40-42 Boston Red Sox had lofty expectations going into the 2025 Major League Baseball season. After key free agency signings of Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler, and Aroldis Chapman, trading for Superstar Left hander Garret Crochet, the return of Garret Whitlock, and Trevor Story, the Boston Red Sox had immense buzz, and optimism leading into the Regular Season. With Juan Soto leaving the division, and Gerrit Cole going down with a Tommy John surgery in early March, the path was paved for not only a Wild Card berth, but even competition for the division. The soap opera that has been the Boston Baseball Red Sox have shown anything but competitiveness for the American League East Division.
The major story of this season rides along the story of 3rd baseman Rafael Devers, and the dramatics of him giving up his position to make room for superstar free agent signing Alex Bregman. Rafael Devers was a brat during this process, there are no ifs ans or buts about this. It was not like a no name 3rd baseman was taking his position, it wasn't even Marcelo Mayer from Worcester who was slotted in to replace Rafael Devers, it was two time World Series Champion Alex Bregman. This was an opportunity for Devers, to accept reality that this player would be better for the team and give up his spot on the diamond.
My take; the Rafael Devers episodic drama, from spring training, his 0-19 streak to start the year, refusal to switch to 1st after Casas went down... I know he is the poster boy for the drama of this season. I believe 11 was a symptom of the greater disfunction in the Red Sox Organization. Rafael Devers has gone ignored for multiple years when asking for a right handed bat, and starting pitching. The front office has been allergic to urgency for the last 6 years. It wasn't until this offseason were Major League Baseball Games, Wins, and Seasons, were valued by the moves that were made upstairs. That negligence does not simply get unwritten overnight.
Breslow's communication ability has been a complete disaster, he has come off as Fake, Cookie Cutter, and Robotic to the fan base, and the reality is... if that's how we see him, how do the players see him? Look critically in the mirror and say, is Craig Breslow a leader? Do you trust his vision? Craig Breslow essentially looks like a Chaim Bloom 2.0, and if Devers hated Bloom, I bet he would have hated Breslow just like the Sox fans have in this whole saga.
Rafael Devers is the scape goat... the truth is that John Henry's Boston Red Sox are worth 6.1 Billion Dollars. 3rd most in Major League Baseball behind teams such as the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. While the Dodgers and Yankees spend on proven MLB Players, the Red Sox put the entire franchise on the shoulders of 22 year old and jack them all around the diamond. Take a good hard look in the mirror and understand... The Rafael Devers trade was purely a salary dump, Henry wanted off the contract, and in the mean time the Sox lost their best Bat in the lineup, they gave up the second best bat in the American League... for Jordan F-ing Hicks.
