The Patriots need a Quarterback

The NFL Draft is 21 days away! This has been the day that Patriots nation has been waiting for since likely week 5 of the 2024 NFL Season. Yes the Patriots have been out of it for a while and aside from young talents Christian Gonzales and Demario Douglas the New England Patriots have lacked the pure thoroughbred that will sell the fanbase on the future of the Franchise. The Patriots lack the Franchise player the Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs, Allen and the Bills, Burrow and the Bengals even Lawrence with the Jaguars. The Patriots have nobody and the fans have been starving for a long time following the eventual bust of 1st round selection QB Mac Jones.

The Patriots need a Quarterback... that is the reality of all the teams selecting at the top of the draft. The Bears are no doubt taking Caleb Williams at number 1 overall. Washington and New England get to decide who goes at 2 & 3 between Jayden Daniels from LSU, Drake Maye from UNC and JJ McCarthy  from Michigan.

When it comes to the quarterbacks, Daniels closest comp comes down to Lamar Jackson. A run first quarterback that scrambles better than anybody in the draft. He throws the deep ball exceptionally well and is the reigning Heisman award winner. The questions with Jayden Daniels come down to physical health. He does not have a deep injury history in his college career, however his physical frame comes down to 6 ft 4 210 lbs. This is a generous weigh in the kid is wicked lean and it will no doubt take time to put on the weight he needs. This is because the NFL is a completely different league and pass rushers such as Max Crosby, Myles Garret, or even Matthew Judon will destroy him if they get their hands on him. What scares me with Daniels is how easily he could be snapped in half by the monster edge rushers that are in the NFL these days. Barring physical growth on the kids body he seems like an absolute gamer and cares deeply about becoming a franchise player for whichever team drafts him. I would no question draft Daniels if he was there at 3, but that's just it... Jayden Daniels will be selected at pick number 2 overall by the Washington Commanders because the kid looks like a can't miss prospect. The Commanders would be foolish to pass on him.

That leaves JJ McCarthy vs Drake Maye at 3 overall to the New England Patriots. Looking at McCarthy the kid has not proved a thing in his entire collegiate career. He won the National Championship... handing off the ball to his running back. Now listen I am not here to rat on JJ McCarthy I think the kid could have lots of potential he seems like the kind of kid that could shrug off a sack and then bomb a 40 yarder. Do I actually believe it... I need to see it first, show me first JJ. The argument is that Michigan had such a good line along with such a good running game that McCarthy was not needed to develop a pass game. All of that is great and all that he was willing to buy into the winning formula and he has a mentality of winning but forgive me... I feel that I have seen this before. MAC JONES... was a winner, MAC JONES... did what was asked for Alabama and won a National Championship. Mac jones came to the Patriots in 2021 and was put into a completely different role. All of a sudden the Tackles are getting shoved to the side the linebackers are giving a single second window for a good pass. The Wide Receivers are getting 0 separation... its a completely different sport going from an absolute wagon at the collegiate level onto an NFL Team.

I think Drake Maye is the guy, I know the talent is raw, to be honest I have already seen what an "NFL Ready QB" looks like in Mac Jones. The kid won 10 games achieved a playoff berth and made a pro bowl in 2021. His rookie season he reached his ceiling, once defenses began to adjust following some film and adversity began to settle in the kid was exchangeable with Zach Wilson for the worst QB in the league. Its time to look at some real potential. Drake Maye has the highest ceiling in this draft, he can shrug off a sac. Maye can run with the ball he can bomb it deep and him and  Penix throw it the best over the middle. I look at Drake Maye as the next Josh Allen in this draft. A player that will not turtle under pressure. Maye is a player when given the appropriate amount of time to adjust foot work I can believe will have the potential to be a franchise quarterback for the Patriots going into the new era of Patriots football.
