Full Throttle

On November 2nd, 2023 Red Sox Chairman, Tom Werner vowed the Red Sox would go full throttle in the offseason to improve the ball club for the 2024 season. The Sox have done anything but this during this offseason with cutting payroll to an already last place finishing team. The Red Sox signed Lucas Giolitto to a one year deal with an option in year 2. They traded Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for a 2nd base prospect Vaughn Grissom and have missed out on mega stars Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, along with of course, kicking the leader of the lockeroom Justin Turner to the curb after the amazing year he put up for the team last year.
The largest concerns to address in this off season was the Red Sox needed quality starting pitching and a right handed bat. Either through free agency or through trade these issues needed to be addressed. The Six had no pitching coming from Worcester along with losing Turner and potentially Duvall as well their were options at even upgrading from these players but the team has been so quiet all off season that it seems more and more likely every day. Teoscar Hernandez from the Seattle Mariners was available and not commanding a massive contract and the Red Sox could not meet it. Hernandez would go to the Dodgers aswell who have approached the offseason in the complete opposite direction.
Jorge Soler another power right handed Bat from the Miami Marlins also available still has yet to be signed. The Red Sox would have huge use for Soler in the DH spot as a power right hander at the end of the day it feels they are committed to Masataka Yoshida at Dh because of his liability in left field. Rather than just upgrading from the player.
Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell... now this is where it becomes inexcusable. When it comes to these two players one was a world series champion that played a huge role for the Texas Rangers winning the world series winning clutch playoff games against the Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks. The other Snell was the Cy young award winner for the San Diego Padres who had been battling in a deep NL West division.
When it comes to the pitchers if the Sox bring in even one it could right all the wrongs that have come from this atrocious offseason. Tom Werner hears the noise states the Sox are going full throttle walks his comments back two months later. John Henry leads the charge in a 3 billion dollar purchase by Fenway Sports Group of the PGA Tour. Winter Weekend in Springfield happens and the fans are rioting. The fans are booing and livid. John Henry doesn't even appear at the event. Sam Kennedy states that everyone that questions their passion for the team is a liar. An absolute train wreck of an off season.
Where I stand on all of it, The Red Sox brought in Theo Epstein, this will be a whole other post but at this point with Theo in the building their is hope for the franchise. Their is hope that they can somehow turn this pure train wreck around. Without Theo Epstein the front office is littered with incompetency and until ownership is willing to put their money where their mouth is... it is absolutely fair to question their desire to put a competitive baseball team in Fenway park this year.
