Week 14 Pats/Steelers
The New England Patriots actually won a game this week so I am back to write about one of their games for once. Bailey Zappe got the start in this game and it looked as though the team has moved on from Mac Jones following the loss to the New York Giants.
Bailey Zappe in this matchup threw for 240 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 pick. A decent stat line for the young QB . Zappe in his career is 3-1 in games he has started the real question when it comes down to him is... what took so long? Zappe is currently playing with house money due to the Patriots being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs the earliest thy have been eliminated since the year 2000. The whole quarterback room has been a mess all year long. Mac Jones turtled completely into a shell, Zappe had been cut twice, Grier was cut, Corral never made it to the lockeroom, and Cunningham was just poached by the Ravens. A whole other post coming to you soon. For this game however Zappe had a pretty good game and he got a win for the Patriots and they remained safe in the draft order of rights to the 2nd overall pick in the draft.
Juju Smith-Shuster in his revenge game against the Pittsburgh Steelers had the most production for the Patriots in this game. going for 90 yards on his 4 receptions. Juju finally showing off the Yards after Carry that I was raving about him when the Patriots got him. He has been unable to show this off essentially the entire season but he finally in this game had a decent performance so I have to give my flowers.
Rhamondre Stevenson was injured last week in the Chargers game so Ezekiel Elliot handled the rush attack. Elliot on the Patriots is one of their best weapons/. He and Stevenson both dominate through defensive linebackers. Zeke is a little more explosive and Stevenson is more shifty. Elliot for 68 yards on 22 carries, almost exclusively with possession of the ball throughout the 2nd half of the game. Mainly to kill clock the Patriots got the lead early off of terrible play from Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky and the Pats never looked back. It was an underwhelming 2nd half by the Patriots but their defense was able to secure the win.
The Patriots Defense has been playing at Superbowl caliber all season they held the Indianapolis Colts the New York Giants and the Las Angeles Chargers to 10 points or under in all 3 games and their offense was so bad that they lost all 3 games. First time in the super bowl era that it has ever happened. The Pats defense played another great game against the Steelers and they deserved to win this game. Matt Judon and Christian Gonzales have been hurt for the majority of the season yet the defense has just gotten stronger. They have played on short rest every single night because their offense has been so abysmal yet they just continue to improve. The defense deserved this one.
While in the long run at this juncture you really don't want the Patriots winning games the defense earned this win. The Pittsburgh Steelers also lost two consecutive games to 2 win teams at home which is devastating for their playoff chances in a powerful AFC North. Ruining the Steelers chances of making the playoffs and holding onto the 2nd overall pick is honestly mission accomplished. The Giants Commanders and Bears and Jets all won their games aswell this week which means this win is no harm no foul. The Patriots go on to play the Kansas City Chiefs who have lost two straight against the Packers and Bills it will be interesting to see how the Patriots Defense attempts to contain Pat Mahomes who is due to destroy the New England Patriots.
