Week 9: Pats/Commanders
The pain staking process that is the 2023 NFL Season continues for Patriots fans. Falling to 2-7 on the year has been an experience unlike any other for fans that have grown up during the era of eat sleep and breathe Patriots football. The Patriots lost on their home field once again to another team that is at the bottom of the standings. The Washington Commanders were 3-5 going into this matchup and had sold at the NFL deadline. The Patriots at home go on to lose to a bad team that intentionally got worst to protect their draft standing. At this point... I am in the tank, if the Patriots end up with a pick outside of the top 5 overall this entire process would have been a waste of time in my eyes.
Mac Jones went for 220 yards with a touchdown and an interception. For Mac Jones 220 yards is not to bad of a game. Once again it came down to a couple bad moments that costed the team another shot at a win. Jones had another bad throw that was floated well past Tyquan Thornton. Jones on the game winning drive in the 4th quarter had Smith-Shuster in the slot the pass went off of Smith-Shuster's hands and went right to Jartavius Martin sealing the deal for the 7th Patriots defeat of the season.
In this game Rhamondre Stevenson looked amazing having his best game of the season. Stevenson went for 87 yards on 9 carries. Averaging 9.1 yards per carry along with a touchdown. Stevenson had the longest rush of his career going for a 64 yard rush that he took all the way to the house. Rhamondre Stevenson has now strung together 2 very good performances for the Patriots. At the end of the day he is one of the shining bright spots in a very bleak Patriots offense.
Demario Douglas lead the way in receiving for the Patriots with 55 yards. Juju Smith-Shuster right behind him at 51 yards. When it comes to the final play I give Smith-Shuster props on this front at least owning up to the play. As opposed to DeVante Parker's drop against the Raiders in week 6 that set me and all the Patriots fans off. The truth is that the game in the air has not been able to get going since week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles who had been going through a Week 1 Super Bowl hangover.
The Patriots defense got to the Quarterback 3 times, they forced 1 fumble and got 1 interception. The Commanders went 9/17 on 3rd down which comes down to 52% efficiency on 3rd down. The Patriots defense needs to finish these drives strong and put the Commanders offense away this is the only way they can win games. This is because the offense given poor field position is a guaranteed 3 and out. Patriots fans at this point do not trust the offense to get down the field at all to even reach field goal range. This season has been the most depressing in recent memory for New England Patriots fans.
The Patriots go on to Frankfurt Germany this Sunday for an international game. The Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts play this Sunday at 9:30 am. The Colts young super star Quarterback Anthony Richardson is out for the season, his back up Gardner Minshew has been sufficient for them. Wide Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and Running Back Jonathan Taylor are the big weapons for the Patriots to contain. When it comes to the offense at this point, Stevenson and Douglas are the only players I trust to create. Establish the run first through Stevenson and then hopefully Mac can string up some decent throws to build his confidence.
