Red Sox Hire Craig Breslow as Chief Baseball Officer

The extensive search for the Chaim Bloom replacement has finally ended, former reliever Craig Breslow has been hired officially as the Chief Baseball Officer. My honest reaction, I am open minded and willing to give it a chance to see how it goes. At the back of my head I know that Breslow was the 10th candidate in the search. Meaning not their first, not their second, all the way down to their 10th choice.  On the other hand he was the assistant general manager for Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs. Breslow's real claim to fame is his job in charge of pitching for the Chicago Cubs. Names such as Marcus Stroman and Justin Steele have Breslow written all over them.

The entire philosophy of Craig Breslow is the stamped on the pitching operation in Chicago. The arms on the staff, the arms in the farm, all go through Breslow. The Red Sox need an entire revamp when it comes to pitching, the have Sale who is past his prime now, along with litany of fringe starting/relief hybrid arms. Whitlock & Houck are not good enough to be on a world series caliber rotation, on a middling Red Sox rotation they are.

The Red Sox have one of the highest ranked farm systems in baseball, between Worcester, Portland and Salem, the pitching prospects are no where to be found. The two prospects that crack the top 10 are Gonzales and Drohan, hopefully under  Breslow these players will improve under his staff and be legitimate major league caliber.

Where the questions lie, comes down to the major league club, the Sox have a a massive amount of prospects and fun young players, 8 positions in Fenway for the position players. Some of the prospects need to be moved to address the biggest weakness of the team right now. Is Breslow willing to make moves in the off season and at the deadline. The history of Breslow being a former player should help to put some perspective into the front office when he brings in his staff.

Breslow knows what it feels like to a club being abandoned at the trade deadline, when all of the players are begging for a move and all that comes are crickets. Breslow has never swung a major league deal, is he willing to get the guys we need this offseason to turn this ship around. The Boston Red Sox rotation was embarrassing last season, They need not 1 but 2 pitchers ahead of Brayan Bello. They need legitimate proven starters to give the Sox 6 innings a night and be dependable on the mound. Now that the Red Sox finally have their guy, Breslow can get to work and get the pitchers we need. Keep your eyes on Chris Sale, I would not be surprised if he is moved during the offseason, I also could see Breslow trying to fix him so take that as you will.

Targets for Craig Breslow this offseason should be Blake Snell from San Diego, Aaron Nola from Philadelphia, two teams with obscene payroll right now that could be attainable for the Sox. Also the team Japan kids, Yamamoto and Ohtani, two pillars going into free agency of baseball right now. Shane Bieber and Corbin Burnes two more super stars that could be done with playing in the weak central division and market looking for a shot at a championship. The Red Sox have found their guy, it is time for him to get to work, the product on the field needs whole sale changes!
