Eyes on Malik Cunningham
The New England Patriots are currently in the midst of a total downwards spiral to the bottom of the NFL standings and the bottom of the NFL period. The Patriots are currently neighbors with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, and Arizona Cardinals, the Patriots lost to the Bears last year so I put them below Chicago. They beat Arizona, so the Patriots are not likely the absolute worst franchise but New England is right in the conversation with Carolina who should have number 1 pick this season but owe to Chicago for trading up to 1 overall last season. Along with Arizona who has had a rotating door at Quarterback the last half decade using number 1 overall draft selections new offensive minded head coaches and electric weapons with the franchise still yet to pan out. This leads us to the disaster of the QB room that the Patriots built and what leads to our first young talent to keen in on... Malik Cunningham.
Mac Jones has not panned out this season, it was his season to prove he can be the starter for the Patriots and it has not been going well. The Patriots have scored 3 months so far in the month of October with absolute door slammer losses to the Cowboys and Saints. The Patriots go to Las Vegas in what could be Mac Jones last chance as the starter for the franchise. The leading reason from the beat writers in Foxborough is that despite how bad Mac is, Bailey is significantly worse, which is why we have not seen a lot of Zappe in this season, it looks that he has regressed from the prior season he had. The Patriots had a last ditch attempt to sign Matt Corral and it failed. It seemed that Corral was dealing a mental issue so all we can do is pray for him that he can get through what ever he is battling. The Patriots also added Will Greer who has been in the Dallas Cowboys system he was their 3rd string QB behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. The Patriots still are not satisfied with Will Greer in the room either because he has yet to see the field in these blowouts.
The New England Patriots not only elevated promising prospect Malik Cunningham... they gave him a 3 year deal. Bill Belichick has sang his praise for Malik Cunningham since training camp, he was an undrafted talent that was learning an entire new position and did it flawlessly. Cunningham played quarterback at Louisville and joined the Patriots training camp to compete for a spot on the 53 man roster. He shined picking up concepts routes and knowledge as a wide receiver and quarterback. Malik Cunningham had some minutes in game scenarios aswell during the pre season. He bloomed... the kid made the most of every snap he had out there, showing poise as a dual threat quarterback. Rushing for a touchdown and rolling out of the pocket and almost making a highlight touchdown pass if not for the receiver the pass was a dime and the kid shows extreme promise with the opportunities given to him.
The bright spots on the roster are definitely the youth on the team. Demario Douglas is emerging in the Wide Receiver 1 the team needs, every time he gets the ball he is making plays with his legs. Christian Gonzales before getting hurt was hands down the best player in the draft. He had not just rookie of the year or defensive rookie he had defensive player of the year locked up. Kayshon Boutte looks to be a little more raw but still overall very talented wide receiver just needs to learn the toe tap this is the big leagues now he needs to know it. With seeing the youth emerge the way it has along with Cunningham going off at camp and pre season all we can do is hope that we something today... that there is a light at the end of the tunnel because right now it has been brutal to be a Pats fan this season.
