Week 3: Pats/Jets
On September 24th the New England Patriots picked up their first win of the season. In a dire situation the Patriots kept their season alive and picked up a must win in MetLife Stadium to triumph over the New York Jets. The Story of this game came down to the reception by Pharaoh Brown who took a minor pass from Mac Jones and took it all the way to the house. The Patriots would win this game 15-10 against an offensively starved New York Jets. The Jets have an absolute stacked roster between backs Hall & Cook. Receivers in Wilson and Lazard, to defenders in Williams and Gardener. The Cast of talent is some of the best in the league. The low hanging fruit that it all comes back to is the Quarterback Zach Wilson who is a liability to the teams success.
The sad part of this game was how it was so close... The Patriots simply lack on the offensive end. The only target Mac Jones trusts in a tough spot is Hunter Henry. Kendrick Bourne had 4 catches for 46 yards. It needs to be noted that the Jets are aswell stacked on defense. The Patriots had multiple shots to slam the door shut on this game. Unfortunate penalties by the Patriots would keep the Jets in this game. The Patriots racked up 4 penalties in the 3rd quarter including 2 false starts within a 12 second window. These penalties played a huge factor in why the Patriots could not get their offense off the ground.
The biggest reason for the offensive struggles really comes down to this. The team is built to run the ball. They rely on their defense to get stops and hold teams to 20 points. On offense its all about running the ball and controlling possession and the clock. The Patriots are not built for a shootout or track meet like teams in Miami and Buffalo. The largest problem is the Patriots have not been running the ball well so far this season. Is that on Stevenson? is that on the run block? It has to be a little bit of both. Ezekiel Elliot on 16 carries went for 80 yards vs Stevenson on 16 carries went for 59 yards. The team has been struggling on the ground and if they are going to flow as a complete offensive unit they are going to need to establish the run and early in games.
Number 7, Juju Smith-Shuster... has been invisible for the Patriots. The Patriots let Jakobi Meyers walk out the door to pay Juju 3 years for 33 million and he has been a non factor for the club. Smith-Shuster had 1 catch for 5 yards and that was it. It felt the Patriots were finally free of the terrible contracts when Jonnu Smith & Nelson Agholor were finally off the books, and then we sign Juju Smith who has been flat out terrible. If your a Pats fan you are hoping that Douglas and Boutte can grow into larger roles in the Patriots wide receiver room.
At the end of the day a win is a win... The Patriots needed to win this game, the Jets without Aaron Rodgers is a must win on the schedule for a Patriots team that is truing to secure a playoff spot. If the Patriots lost this game the season was most likely over because the Patriots have to go into Dallas who are a contender for the NFC East division crown. Now after this win you can rationalize the first two losses. The Eagles are the reigning NFC Champions along with the Dolphins who are the hottest team in the league right now and a potential challenger to Mahomes and the Chiefs. Tua is playing like an MVP candidate right now. Those are two really good teams.
This Sunday, anything can happen... the Patriots go into AT&T stadium to face Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboy Pass Rush is going to feast on this pocket-size offensive line. If the Patriots secondary can force Dak to make mistakes that will be their window into this game. The Cowboys are coming off of a loss to the Arizona Cardinals without Kyler Murray so there is a shot you could catch the Cowboys asleep. If the Patriots can pull it off they will improve to 2-2 on the season and in contention for a playoff spot this season. Kick off is at 4:25 this Sunday, hopefully the team can come in and get a win.
