Thornton vs Boutte vs Pop

After long waiting the New England Patriots are finally back! Tonight at 7pm the Patriots host their first pre-season matchup against the CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans. The biggest narratives to watch unfold going into this pre season is, the wide receiver room, the offensive line and will Mac Jones play in the pre season?
Starting with our first pilar is the wide receiver room. The Patriots brought in Juju Smith-Schuster as their Jakobi Meyers replacement, who brings more yards after carry but less conversions in the end zone. Not the worst look if the Patriots are banking on using Bourne and Stevenson to secure those touchdowns. Not only this but it looks like the tight ends will be the primary weapons for the offense. To really keen in on the room there is an intense competition in Patriots training camp and pre season right now between 3 young revivers for 2 spots on the roster. Tyquan Thornton, Demario Douglas, and Kayshon Boutte are all in an intense competition to make the roster and this pre season will mainly be about these 3 players to show who has the most upside and who is ready to help the team when Sunday afternoon football finally comes.
Starting with Thornton he was selected at #50 overall in the 2nd round by the Patriots from Baylor. The main draw from this kid was his speed his 40 yard was a whopping 4.28. Thornton showed out in camp last year but became injured during the regular season last year and was out the majority of the year becoming a non factor in the offense now he has been back at camp this summer and has been a non story in camp which is not a good sign because the two rookies below him are driving a real competition for the last spots in the wide receiver room.
Kayshon Boutte is someone I have wrote about in a prior blog, the upside of this kid is astronomical. Boutte was selected in the 6th round at 187th overall by the New England Patriots, when originally he was projected as not just a first round pick but the number 1 receiver in the 2023 draft. The LSU Tiger had shown flashes of pure greatness that resembled the likes of Jamarr Chase. Boutte would go through an injury and there would be questions about his character which would lead him to fall all the way to the 6th round where Belichick would snag him. If anyone could get through to the kid who else but the greatest coach of all time the upside is ridiculous with Boutte keep your eyes on him tonight.
While I was at camp the kid that caught not just my eye but most of the fans and reporters was Demario Douglas. The receiver out of Liberty college was also selected out of the 6th round at 210th overall by Belichick and the Patriots. His scouting report listed strengths of being explosive getting to fastest gear in record time. His weaknesses listed that he was smaller and lacked a second gear. In camp Douglas has been showing out showing off the explosiveness matched his precise rout running demolishing the Patriots élite cornerbacks. Demario "Pop" Douglas was the one prospect in the room that looked to be the odd one out. Until it came to camp where he looks like one of the top pass catchers on the field. The kid hasn't had a bad day at camp, which is all you can ask for from a rookie coming out of the 6th round, it all depends now if it can be translated into game day, which starts in 5 hours!
Tonight the 3 will go head to head with Bailey Zappe against the Houston Texans it is highly unlikely any of them are cut because of the potential they have, but one of them will likely be moved to injured reserve. Will it be Thornton who the Patriots are desperate to see succeed as a highly covitted2nd round pick, George Pickens who was selected the pick after by the Pittsburgh Steelers has emerged as one of their top weapons. Will it be Kayshon Boutte who was projected the top receiver in the draft that fell down to the 6th round in the Patriots lap. Or the potential steal of the draft! Demario Pop Douglas who is finally going to get his shot starting tonight against the Houston Texans
