Krejci Hangs up the Skates
The third domino has officially fallen for the championship era Boston Bruins. Zdeno Chara in 2022, Patrice Bergeron in late July and now David Krejci has officially joined the old folks in retirement now in mid august of 2023. David Krejci was a core pillar for the he played 16 season with the Boston Bruins. Krejci was a member of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup Champion team. David Krejci had 3 Stanley Cup finalist appearances in 2011 when he won, along with 2013 and 2019, where the bruins would fall to the Blackhawks and Blues. David Krejci had lead the NHL in Playoff points in 2011 and 2013 being one of the greatest offensive playmakers in this era for the Boston Bruins.
Fans of the Boston Bruins definitely saw this retirement happening, as I mentioned in the Bay State Sports Podcast following the Bergeron retirement, it definitely looked like David Krejci was in the game for retirement. David Krejci had left the team before to play for the Czech Republic, he mentioned in his media availability that his body cannot keep up with an entire 82 game season. Krejci and Bergeron had been battling through injury in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It would seem now due to health he was ready to hang up the skates.
Going forward leadership is a massive question for these Boston Bruins. The team has lost Tukka Rask, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, Bruce Cassidy and now David Krejci. David Krejci was also quoted saying that he "here’s one thing he’s missing, the Stanley Cup. And I think he has a good chance with the Bruins. Hopefully, they’ll get it done soon.(Boston.Com) Krejci tells the Boston media that David Pasternak is one of the most elite players in the league he has the skills to carry the team the Cup, does he have the intangibles to be a leader in lockeroom, to lead the bruins to the Cup.
Krejci was also quoted saying “Then you have [Charlie] McAvoy, Pasta, Charlie Coyle. There are so many good players, so many good leaders in the dressing room. So I’m not worried about the leadership in the room at all.(Boston.com)" This is powerful Krejci is telling the fans of the Bruins to bank on Charlie McAvoy captaining the defense and being one of the big leaders of Boston Hockey. With him of course Brad Marchand is the last veteran voice on this team. Its all in due time to see how long Marchand continues to play but he still can be a leading voice and play maker for the team.
Finally its time to look at the depth at center. The bruins have lost Bergeron and Krejci in the same off season. Two of the cornerstones for the franchise in the center position for the team. Alot is being asked of Pavel Zacha to be a semblance of the next Bergeron. Mainly because it would be unfair to ask the kid of those expectations. But the team needs a center. Now that Krejci is gone aswell there is a hole in the 3rd line for Boston Hockey. Pavel Zacha looks like a potential comparison to Bergeron in terms of defense and playmaking. His scoring can improve throughout his career. Charlie Coyle is a legit talent he is a legitimate offensive playmaker scoring 16 goals a season in 3 of his last 4 seasons and last year bringing 28 and 29 assists in his last two seasons. The Bruins are asking the two young talents to now take the next step with added responsibility we are all looking forward to see if they can answer the call.
