Boston Bruins Blow it up!

I have regurgitated at nauseum the level of choke the 2023 Bruins brought to the picture of the latest NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. This really is the main storyline for Boston Hockey at the moment. Their former head coach went on to win the cup with the Golden Knights, Patrice Bergeron is still undecided on committing to another NHL season with the Bruins or without. The Bruins traded super star Taylor Hall in a salary dump to free up cap space to retain key players they acquired at the trade deadline. Then Tyler Bertuzzi signed with the Toronto Maple Leaf's... The Bruins legitimately looked shell shocked going into this off season. They went all in at the deadline as they should and then got upset and have flopped hard losing assets left and right.

This is all happening because the bruins are having serious problems with the salary cap. This is because the bruins are refusing to drop either on of their goalies. They want the power bear hug duo to remain intact of Ullmark and Swayman. This is a risky move mainly because Swayman is a bright young talent in the making  who may be done playing second fiddle to Ullmark. Also he is still a restricted free agent so if you want to go all in on the double goalies you still can in this window. This risk also comes at a steep price however because you have to sacrifice great depth and great players to fit your books under the NHL salary cap.

In turn Tomas Nosek has left in free agency to sign with the New Jersey Devils. The Bruins acquired the left wing in 2021 and had been a decent player for their line depth. Last season Nosek scored 7 goals, 11 assists on 18 points, not crazy production but the bruins were not going to give him the deal that New Jersey gave.  That contract turned out to be 1 year at 1 million, Sweeney and the bruins are looking at other avenues for left wing.

Matt Grzelcyk is the next piece the Bruins are waiting on whether they can set up a new deal to keep the defenseman or if they will move on and lean on McAvoy even harder. The depth is being challenged during the offseason, According to BOSHOCKEYNOW Forbort could be the next domino to fall for Sweeney and the Bruins in a trade to free up more cap space, this all is in turn on the decision to keep rather than trade the Vesna winner Linus Ullmark at his highest possible value. The Bruins are taking a bet that their formula of Goalie depth and goalie rotation of fresh goalies is the way to win and they are banking on it working. If they can stick to the formula that worked instead of pure panic in the moment of adversity it will be interesting to see if they could make a cup run in 2024.
