Celtics Select Jordan Walsh
The theory behind trading down comes all back to the salary cap of the Boston Celtics. If the Celtics used the 25th pick to select a player in the 1st round, they would be forced to use cap space on the player they drafted. The Celtics Cap Space is running dry at the moment with three huge contracts on their books at the moment. Jayson Tatum is scheduled to be making 32 million next year. Kristaps Porzingis just opted into his player option to play for the Celtics so he is scheduled to make 36 million. Jaylen Brown when he signs the Super max will be making 295 over 5 in total 59 million a year, it will be incrementally a year but just massive contracts on their books right now.
In order to fix their books the Celtics needed to draft a player on a two way contract that wont affect their books, and recoup future assets with their pick, it was a stellar move during the draft for Brad Stevens. Walsh played his one and done college career for Arkansas State. The young forward averaged 7 pts 4 rebounds and 1 assist. The offensive game was not what they were looking for with this kid. The scouting report stated that he is a gritty kid, with electric defense. He has the potential to guard positions 1 through 5, he's strong and long, the Celtics will try to develop him into gritty defensive presence to supplement their defense. You will likely see Walsh playing for the Maine Celtics and garbage time in TD Garden, until potentially the prospect can earn some solid minutes off the bench. The last thing to do is wait and see!
